Wellers specialist postcard sale on March 31st was greeted with enthusiasm by collectors and dealers alike. there was interest from around the globe with many buyers bidding live over the internet.
A major part of the sale came from the estate of one passionate collector who had built a huge collection including some very rare items.
The star lot featured a number of real photo scenes including an early photo of Guildford Market featured by the Surrey Advertiser, and a number of other photo topography cards, much sought after, it finally sold for £680.
A small selection of advertising cards sold for £120, and a lot of novelty cards made a surprising £260.
Louis Wain, the artist who is known for his depiction of characterful cats proved popular as ever a small lot containing just two Wain cards selling at £130.
A small collection of cards of military interest was hotly contested and sold at £420 and a group of transport interest cards sold for £380. Every lot of the 90 lot sale found a buyer, many selling far in excess of expectations.
Charlotte Grey of Wellers who catalogued the sale was delighted with the results" It just goes to show that with good publicity and live internet bidding, regional salerooms such as Wellers provide a very good alternative to the London salerooms."
